Community Hours

Volume Ninety Four

Ready Steady Volunteer

Mandela Month
Edition 2

Volunteering is an incredible experience – making an impact in our communities and in our country, was the call to action by our beloved Nelson Mandela, and in his honour Community Hours has set about giving you 67 opportunities to do just that. On more than “just one day” the spirit of human kindness extends endlessly – now you can offer your “67 minutes for Mandela” during the entire month of July! In our second “Make Everyday a Mandela Day” Feature Edition, we have another set of fabulous experiences for you to consider. Keep an eye on your inbox and be sure you don't miss any of the 67 opportunities.

 The Wilds

Looking for a worthwhile way to give your 67 minutes for Mandela Day this year? Join the Wilds on the 16th of July from 09h00 – 15h00. Bring gardening tools and help The Wild's team clear dead wood, undergrowth and prune trees. All you need to bring is cutting tools and gloves.

It's all part of a bigger project to take back The Wilds, a remarkable 40-acre park all planted with indigenous plants and trees. James Delaney will be hanging an installation of 67 metal owls for Mandela Day in a century-old forest. Some other jobs that need doing are planting and repairing the old greenhouses, planting seedlings, painting benches and repairing stone pathways. Let James know what interests you on the day, and he will direct you to an activity that you most enjoy doing.

There will be a mobile coffee station available from 09h00 to 13h00. Parking for the day is next to Roedean on Joe Slovo. Dogs are welcome! No booking necessary, just arrive and have fun. Visit the Facebook page for more information.

The message behind Mandela Day is simple – everyone has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better, this can be done through a commitment to volunteer or to provide service to the community. This Mandela Day Epworth Children's Village is offering a wide variety of opportunities to choose from.

If you would like to work with the children, here are some ideas:

1. Read stories to children
2. Bake cookies and take them along and spend some time with the children
3. Tutor someone who needs help learning your mother tongue
4. Play games/build puzzles during your visit

Support Epworth's winter clothing drive and donate an item to a child:

Epworth welcomes all donations of old and new items that they need such as pajamas, gowns, slippers and winter clothes such as boots, coats, hats, jerseys, long sleeved shirts, long sleeved vests, pants, scarves, ski pants, sneakers, socks, sweaters, sweatshirts and tracksuits. Blankets and other household appliances are welcome too.

Make a ‘Care Kit' and donate it

Care Kits include a comb/brush, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, face cloth, roll on, or cream. Make up a ‘Care Kit' for one or two Epworth children.

Food drive

Epworth will be grateful for donations of non-perishable food such as tinned food - bake beans; tomato and onion; sweetcorn; tuna; pilchards in tomato sauce; soups; cereals; rice; mealie meal; samp; pasta; spreads for bread. Epworth also welcomes essentials such as toilet paper; cleaning goods; cooking oil; sugar; and tea.

MDF, together with Adventures Skydive, are hosting a Tandem Skydiving event to raise funds for those affected with muscular dystrophy. The event will take place on the 12th and 13th of August 2017 at the Leeukop Farm Airfield in Deneysville.

Adventure Skydives offers skydiving with a difference – the fast speed at which you rush towards the ground due to the thin air in the Highveld. In the tandem jump, after a quick briefing, you are good to go, attached to an instructor with a special harness for two.
A tandem jump will cost you R3, 500. You will also receive a DVD which contains a video and photos taken of your jump. A portion of your tandem jump cost going towards the MDF.

If you would like to join MFD email Robert Scott on mdfgauteng@mdsa.org.za

 Woodrock

Woodrock plans to hold a mass sterilization day from the monies raised from Woodrock's Mandela Day 2017. Together with Councillor Betty Ringane from Atteridgeville Township WARD 107, Woodrock have scheduled the township outreach sterilization day in Attridgeville on Friday 18th August 2017. Their goal is to raise R40 000. This will enable them to sterilize 100 animals. They are appealing to their supporters to donate R67.

Join Woodrock Animal Rescue on the 18th July 2017, to take part in their lock and key project. For R67 volunteers can purchase a padlock from Woodrock, and secure the padlock onto their fence. By doing so volunteers will be locking your heart into animal welfare. Taking the key home with you, this key will be a reminder of the animals locked away without a voice, without a choice, that depend on Man. We can all reflect on the years that Madiba was locked away without a choice without a voice.
